I am not exactly sure what this is, so I hope some Maynard experts will chime in with some information. This appears to be a MODEL 1873 MAYNARD SPORTING RIFLE made by MASS ARMS CO in CHICOPEE FALLS. It has a 26 inch barrel and the bore is 32 caliber. The gap between the breech face and the barrel seems to indicate it is chambered for one of the thick rim Maynard cartridges. The chabber appears to be tapered and it will chamber a 38 S&W cartridge, but it is a loose fit. The puzzling part is that it appears to be a percussion gun as it has a nipple instead of a firing pin. The serial number on the tang is 3309. It has a barrel mounted rear sight and an ivory bead front sight. Also there is a vintage Lyman tang sight. The barrel retains 90-95% original blue and the bore is excellent. The receiver was originally case hardened and retains traces of color. All markings are sharp and clear. The action is tight and it operates perfectly. I fired a percussion cap on the nipple and shoots out through the breech face, so this may have been designed for a cartridge loading fired by a percussion cap?????? The butt stock is solid with most of the original finish. This is an ANTIQUE so NO FFL is required and it will ship direct to you. FOREIGN SALES OK at extra shipping.
