Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “SMITH & WESSON”. The top of the barrel is Marked “SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD. MASS. U.S.A. / PATENTED FEB.6.06.SEPT.14.09.DEC.29.14”. The right side of the barrel is marked “S.&W.SPECIAL CTG” The serial number “S 914453” is stamped on the bottom of the grip frame, the face of the cylinder and the barrel flat. “914453” is stamped on the yoke face. The right side of the grip, near the grip pin is marked “M4” and “7”. The right side plate has the S&W logo which includes “TRADE / S&W / MARK / REG. U.S. PAT.OFF.”. The right side of the frame is marked “MADE IN U.S.A.”.

Sights / Optics: The revolver is mounted with a fixed square notch rear sight milled in the top strap. The front sight is a fixed round blade. The sights appear to be unaltered.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are walnut Magna grips with silver colored S&W medallions and a diamond in the checkering at the grip screw. The grips appear heavily oiled, with flattened checkering. The left panel has a small chip missing at the top near the cylinder release. The right panel has a compression mark near the top of the checkering. There are also some compression marks on the bottom of the right panel, perhaps from hammering. The grips rate in about Good overall condition.

Type of Finish: Blue

Finish Originality: All Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is a trace of leading at the forcing cone.

Overall Condition: This revolver retains about 70% of its metal finish. It has developed a gray patina over time. There are very light drag marks on the cylinder and its leading edge is worn suggesting repeated holstering. The front sides of the barrel show thinning, again perhaps from holstering. The side plate is worn at the top by the hammer, probably from a holster strap. It has a serrated trigger and finely checkered hammer that probably were case hardened. The screw heads are mildly distorted but very serviceable. The markings are clear. Overall, this gun rates in about Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The cylinder lock-up remains solid. We have not fired this gun.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: The pictured belt and holster are included.

Our Assessment: This revolver is the square butt, K frame that became the S&W Model 10. For over 100 years this revolver has been popular with military, police and civilian shooters. We believe this example is a post WWII, pre-model 10 made between 1945 and 1948. It seems to meet all the criteria with the exception of not having the four address lines on the right side of the frame, where it instead is marked “MADE IN U.S.A”. (See page 143 of “Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson” by Jim Supica and Richard Nahas.) This particular revolver evidences wear that appears to have come from being used with a thumb strap right hand holster. This revolver would work well to teach new shooters, plink, carry in the field as a sidearm, for home defense, private security or even ICORE competition. There are few handguns as versatile as this .38 special revolver.

CA Legal or CA Private Party Transferable: This pistol is a C&R and can be sold I California. This gun s also available for a private party transfer at our shop in Simi Valley. This does not apply to out of state buyers.

Your item will be shipped within 1 week of receipt of good funds, usually the next day. If you are in Southern California, you are welcome to pick your item up and complete the transfer at our shop in Simi Valley (M-F, 8-5).

This gun can only be shipped to an FFL or C&R, and it will be shipped from an FFL. It is your responsibility to ensure that the gun is legal to own and receive in your area. If you would like to be notified when we receive your payment, please obtain a tracking number from your carrier. We receive about 40 checks a day and do not have the staff required to email everyone when we receive checks.

Payment:

Full payment on non-layaway items is required within 14 days. We accept Cashiers Checks, Money Orders, Cash and Personal Checks. No Credit Cards or electronic payments are accepted. To help us properly apply your payment, please indicate what item you have purchased when payment and/or FFL are sent. If you would like to be notified when we receive your payment, please obtain a tracking number from your carrier. CA Sales tax applies to CA buyers (7.25%).

Layaways are offered on all items, requiring a 20% non refundable down payment within 7 days of the auction’s close and the balance within 60 days. We do not require prior notice to place an item on the layaway. No returns are accepted on layaway items and the item will be considered abandoned after 60 days.

Successful Bidder Instructions:

You will be invoiced by the morning following the sale. This invoice will include totals for the sale and all instructions.

If you win an item and are not willing or able to complete the sale, you will be liable for 5% of the sale price.
