Description

Seller's Description:
US Model 1873 Springfield Trapdoor Indian Wars pre-Custer rifle, serial # 53,xxx, mfg in 1875. Research states it falls in the serial range issued to the 5th Infantry Regiment during the Indian Wars. In 1876, the 5th Infantry was dispatched to Southeastern Montana in the wake of Custer’s defeat at the Little Big Horn River. The regiment built Ft. Keogh near the confluence of the Yellowstone and Tongue Rivers and proceeded to wage year-round campaigns against the local Indians, primarily Sioux and Northern Cheyenne. This rifle looks totally correct with all of the very early features. Breach end of barrel VP proof mark. Hi-arch breech block marked Model 1873,eagle head with crossed arrows, and U.S. vertically. Lockplate marked US Springfield 1873. Correct early rifle sight, cleaning rod of the very earliest type with flat face on the end. Bore is clean with rifling no sign of pitting. Lock's strong two click tumbler works fine. Wood is very good, just the usual handling marks. No major cracks or gouges. There are two visible cartouches present, one located on the side of the stock and the other underneath the stock behind the trigger guard. It comes with an original Trapdoor sling, US bayonet and what appears to be A Civil War vintage scabbard. This rifle one of several antiques purchased from a private collection, It is in excellent condition and has been well preserved over the years. Taking all factors under consideration, along with its history, makes this early model rifle more desirable and highly collectable. Others in this condition have sold for much more at auction. This is considered a pre-1898 antique. No FFL required. SHIPPING IS $40.00 DUE TO THE SIZE AND WEIGHT. Additional info. for the Fifth Infantry Regiment can be found at www.bobcat.ws/history.shtml
