Kittredge Cartridge Box -Superb Condition

This Civil War era copper Kittredge "Pouch" or Cartridge Box was Patented Jan 27, 1863 and reissued April 14, 1863 by Augustus A. Bennett. It seems that B. Kittredge & Co. "GUN DEALERS" in Cincinnati, Ohio, contracted with Bennett to manufacture the cartridge box as an accompaniment to the Frank Wesson rifle for which Kittredge was an agent. Henry rifle owners also used the accessory and today they are associated more with that famous rifle by collectors. This belt carried metallic box was used to protect and make readily available additional rifle cartridges to the Civil War soldier. They appear to be more protective than the more common leather cartridge pouches of the same era. They were also manufactured in brass. While the genuine Kittredge Box is scarce, they are very rarely found in this fine of condition. As the photos verify, the patina is gorgeous and the piece, though used, is undamaged and very well preserved, including the interior. There is virtually no corrosion or green copper oxidation. The spring closed lid is tight and there are essentially no dents. You are not likely to find any better example of this important historical Civil War era item.
