In excellent condition, this .42 Cupfire cartridge (the so-called “Army size”) was produced by Plant’s Manufacturing Company of New Haven, Conn. in the 1860’s. It was loaded from the front of the revolver cylinder and the firing pin would reach the edge of the cartridge base through a small hole at the rear of the cylinder. It was one of many attempts to get around the Rollin White patent owned by Smith & Wesson for a bored through revolver cylinder. A unique piece of early cartridge Americana.
