Description

Seller's Description:
LSB#: 120417EM18

Make: Winchester

Model: 1887

Serial Number: 3217

Year of Manufacture: 1887

Caliber: 12 Gauge

Action Type: Lever Action, Internal Magazine.

Markings: The serial number “3217” is marked on the underside of the receiver; the lower tang is stamped, “Manufactured by the / Winchester Repeating Arms Co. / New Haven, Conn., U.S.A. / Pat. Feb. 16 & July 20 1886.” The handsome Winchester scroll logo is engraved on the left side of the receiver.

Barrel Length: 30 inches.

Choke: .718” at the muzzle.

Sights / Optics: This shotgun is mounted with a short receiver groove and a post perhaps made from a nail front sight.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are varnished wood. The metal butt plate is missing; without it, the LOP measures 11 5/8”. There is a repair to the toe of the stock; a chip at the toe has been carefully repaired, and pinned in place with a brass pin. The stocks rate in about Good overall condition.

Type of Finish: Blue / Case Hardened Receiver.

Finish Originality: Likely refinished at some point. It now looks polished.

Bore Condition: The bore shows erosion but is useable; there is evidence of black powder use.

Overall Condition: This shotgun retains about 25% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows a fine patina. There are numerous small marks, consistent with the age of this weapon, but no major marks of any significance. There are some tiny dents on the top of the barrel, about 13 ½ inches from the breech. These may not even be visible in the accompanying photos. The Screw heads are sharp, those on the top and right side of the receiver seemingly unturned. The markings are clear. Overall, this gun rates in about Very good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions easily and correctly, the lever moves smoothly, and the trigger trips the hammer. We have not test-fired this black-powder-era gun.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None

Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 1887 was the first truly successful repeating shotgun. Its unique lever-action design was chosen by the Winchester Repeating Arms Company, and designed by the legendary designer, John Moses Browning. To find an original, first year production gun of this quality, in this condition, is a rare opportunity. This one is a beauty. The wood shows varnish, some of the screws still show original bluing, and the whole firearm itself is a remarkable engineering accomplishment. The bore shows use with black powder, but it functions beautifully, looks terrific, and is a genuine artifact of the American West. This will make a fine addition to the collection of any discriminating Winchester collector of fine antique firearms, or aficionados of the American West.

CA Legal or CA Private Party Transferable: This shotgun is classified as an antique and can be sold to anyone 18 years of age.
