Seller's Description:
This is a truly rare WWII German k98 Mauser variant, and the first one I have seen in this configuration in 20 years of collecting. This came out of a private collection where it has been for around 40 years. This rifle has been given the seal of approval by the premier German mauser collector here in the US, high bidder will be told his name. This 8mm Mauser rifle started out as a Polish Wz 29 rifle. It was standard issue to the Polish Army during the 1930’s and up to the German invasion in 1939. The German Wehrmacht reissued several thousand of these rifles to their armed forces after the takeover of Poland in 1939. Some receivers and side rails were scrubbed completely and others were just marked with the German code “660” on the receiver and “G 29/40” on the side rail. This is discussed in Law’s “Backbone of the Wehrmacht” on page 283. This particular rifle has had a long history. The receiver and side rail are scrubbed of Polish markings, while there is a Spanish Civil War (1936-39) Loyalist acceptance cartouche on the side of the buttstock. This particular rifle is likely a Polish export rifle that was bought by the Loyalist forces from the Poles before 1939. The German Army sent the Condor Legion into Spain in 1936, and it operated there until the invasion of Poland in 1939. This rifle was obtained by the Germans in Spain, captured most likely, and was brought back to Germany for their weapons stockpiles in 1939. The weapon was fitted with an unnumbered German k98 triggerguard and floorplate and given an inspector waffenampt 214 on the stock takedown disc. The barrel is also rearsenal dated “43” under the woodline. The Spanish Blue Division was fighting alongside the German Army in Russia at the time, and it is also believed that this could well have been brought into German Army weapons stockpiles by them. In any case, this rifle was used by the German Army in WWII... that is certain. The only numbers anywhere on the rifle are on the receiver and on the bolt assembly. The receiver is serial numbered 3801. The bolt is serial numbered 3801 also, matching. The cocking piece is numbered "52", and the safety is unnumbered with very small original Polish proof. Stock is original Polish wz 29 stock, unnumbered, with original waffenampt 214 on takedown disc. Wood has original finish, very good with no gouges or cracks. Metal is above average with 90-100% blue throughout. Bore is dark, but no pitting. Has very faint “8mm” mark under upper band, done when rifle came into the US in late 1950’s...can barely see it. This is a very rare and authentic German WWII k98 variant, and even rarer if it is a Spanish Blue Division piece. If you have a G33/40 for sale, please contact me. No reserve as usual, Good Luck! C&R or FFL needed. k98, m1 garand, springfield, winchester, gew.98, g43, kar98az, Lee-Enfield, Arisaka, mp44, mosin nagant.
