ONE OF THE BEST SPRINGFIELDS THAT I"VE SEEN -
RARE AND READY
An Excellent 1832 Springfield that was "originally" finished
in the "bright" and is still that way. No Rust or Pitting, and believe you
could load this one up and shoot it without any problem. However, and as we
all should know, this is sold as a collector and all firearms should be
checked by a competent gunsmith prior to shooting. The overall length of this
nice Springfield is approximately 45 inches, with a barrel of 29.5 inches.
Very nice Eagle, U S, Springfield, and, date of 1832 on the Lock. Hammer
locks in both clicks and comes down with more than sufficient force. Numbers
of "2 26" match on barrel and inside of stock forearm. Has a dim cartouche
on the left side of the stock reverse of the lock, U S on the top of the butt
plate, as well as several Inspector Marks (S=Shaeffer; L=Laley: and others).
Ramrod looks original to me, and is of proper length to go to the bottom of
the barrel. This musket has been shortened for Cavalry use, whereas, the wood
was cut at the second barrel band and a swivel band was added. It looks as
though this was done many years ago and probably during the Civil War era.
Barrel bands have the "U" on them, as well as some other markings that "I"
have noted on known Confederate weapons. The barrel has the "P" proof and the
Eagle next to the breach end. The front sight looks as though it was hand made
and nicely attached to the front of the barrel. The rear sight is a two leaf
type that is in very good condition. This Springfield would enhance any
collection and is very worthy of added research. Forty-Five photos for you to
look and make your decision and it won't last long at this price. - Have fun
