Seller's Description:
Rare Spanish Astra Model 900 Broomhandle Pistol

The Spanish

gunmaking firm of Astra-Unceta y Cia began

producing a copy of the Mauser C.96 in 1927. Externally similar to the C96 but with non-interlocking internal parts it was produced until 1941, with a production hiatus in 1937 and 1938 and a final batch being assembled from spare

parts in 1951. The Spanish copies of the C96 were generally intended for export to China. But after the commencement of the Sino-Japanese

war (which blocked supply of guns to Chinese forces) the remaining Astra 900s were used in the Spanish Civil War, and numbers were also sold

to Germany in the period 1940–1943.

This specimen, the first we have had in our more than 40

years of operation acquiring fine arms, is all original and in fine condition. The

pistol, serial number 17028 is all matching and retains the the great majority of its original finish (some thinning and mixing with plum brown patina but most original soft blue finish). The markings are crisp and the bore is about MINT. The grips are sound as well. While the serial number is not listed in his first volume on Astra Pistols,

Dr. Antaris has provided the information on this specimen – information which presumable will be available in his volume II which is soon to be published.

The specimen was one of a group of pistols which were produced in 1930 and sent in 1931 to Bilbao in the Basque area of Spain. As far as history is concerned, The Battle of Bilbao was part of the War in the North, during the Spanish Civil War where the Nationalist Army, supported by Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany captured the city

of Bilbao and the remaining parts of the Basque Country still held by the Republicans of Spain (which included volunteers from the United States fighting against Generalissimo Francisco Franco) . The incumbent military Nationalist forces may well have been the recipients of these contract weapons which were among a group of Broomhandle pistols shipped to the military in Bilbao according to Leonardo Antaris. Certainly a one of the highlights in any collection – especially for the G140-24 IZZA collector of “broomhandle” pistols and all variations.
