Seller's Description:
6) FN 49 COMPLETE SNIPER SCOPE WITH MOUNTS (incl. Base mount) -This is an original Belgian military sniper scope for the FN 49 rifle. Complete with matching metal sunshade and Belgian military Echo mount and Base mount for the rifle! All what is needed for mounting on a FN 49. Unlike many sold by a CA dealer this is not a grade II (damaged but repairable) or Grade III (beyond repair) This scope is totally functionnal and has no problems. - Marked ABL No.808 Tireur d’Elite – Telescopische Scherpschutter - OIP Gand. I would like to take a moment to elaborate on the markings of the FN 49 sniper scope. A book on the FN 49 was published a while back – although labeled “a shooters and collectors guide”, this book has done little for the collectors of these fine rifles. The information is often incorrect and not substantiated. With this said, the ABL marking stands for Armee Belge and Belgisch Leger—this abbreviation means Belgian Army in two of the official Belgian languages: French and Flemish. My keyboard does not support accents, so there is one missing in the word “armee”. These scopes were not manufactured in Czechoslovakia or elsewhere in the former Soviet Union as stated in the book, but at OIP in Belgium in the city of Gand (aka Gent). OIP still exists today and still manufactures high quality optics, lasers and such. The author insinuates that these scopes were made by or with MEOPTA, anybody knowledgeable on Meopta optics from the 1950s will automatically laugh with such a statement. Meopta made cheap low quality junk while these scopes were state of the art at the time. (Am I the only one that wonders how a NATO country could acquire scopes from a Warsaw pact country in the midst of the cold war!?!) - Reticle: Complete, there are some dust specs in the scope but it does not damage the clarity, optics are clear and click adjustments work fine. - Finish: Another problem with the FN 49 book, the Belgian Army used the FN 49 in several finishes. Blue, Black enamel/ park and gray paint. I do not know the reason for this specifically but have seen a blue sniper as well as a gray paint sniper in Belgium in a military depot. The gray paint models may have been arsenal refinished or the paint was added to distinguish them, I do not know… The white paint present in the lettering of the scope is original and is not fill paint as used by collectors! These have sold for as much as 750 to over 1000 complete--- Buyer pays shipping, I can ship this via Fed Ex Ground / Fed eX or Post Office. Parcel will only be shipped insured. Please ask all questions before bidding. Two pictures should show on the auction site, please email me if only one shows, I have a second one showing the detail of the markings.
